This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Tobacco Heritage Festival in Sandy Hook, Kentucky for the first time. I was accompanied by my three year old who seems to love bluegrass music as much as I do myself.

The highlight of the festival on Friday was some live bluegrass music. Scott Tackett and Kentucky Sunrise, David Carroll and New River Line and Ron Rigsby performed for the crowd and did an excellent job of it.

Scott Tackett and Kentucky Sunrise – Scott Tackett on vocals and guitar, Carl James on mandolin, Jeremy Newman on upright bass, Ray Craft on guitar, and Don Shug (sp?) on banjo.

David Carroll and New River Line – Dave Carrol vocals and guitar, Chaston Carroll on mandolin, Chad Gilbert on bass, Adam Collinsworth on banjo, guitar and vocals.

Tony Pence and the Sneakin Deacons played on Saturday night but I wasn’t able to make it back over for… Read the rest of this article

The Old Mill Bluegrass Festival has been going on every year in West Liberty, Kentucky since 1996. Before that the get together took place in Lanny Franklin’s back yard! From my understanding it was a small gathering of musicians at first who met up at Lanny Franklin’s every summer to cook out, play music and visit. After awhile the thing got so big they had to move it into town to the Old Mill Park.

This years festival took place this past weekend on July 10th and 11th. As usual I had a great time but this year I got to hang out with my wife and two of my daughters. I have a three year old who really loves the music and talks about banjos and guitars a lot. It was great to see her enjoy the live bluegrass and I trust that will be something that sticks with her as she grows up… Read the rest of this article

Well, we had a really good time at the Clack Mountain Festival in Morehead, Kentucky this weekend. We have a daughter who is three years old now so she was old enough to get into the festivities. It really did my heart good to see her enjoying the music and even getting out there and dancing. She says her favorite instrument is the banjo, mine is the mandolin. There’s just something about the sound of bluegrass mandolin that moves me.

This was the 3rd annual Clack Mountain Festival and bands performed on the Moonlight Stage, next to the Cora Wilson Stewart Moonlight School on First Street.

We got to hear some folks for the first time and we got to hear some of our favorites too. Larry Cordle and Lonesome Standard Time was awesome! I have heard Larry and his band on the radio many times but it was a real treat to see them… Read the rest of this article

There isn’t much better than live Bluegrass music. I especially look forward to hearing Chris Stapleton with The Jompson Brothers. I caught Chris when he was with the SteelDrivers at the Clack Mountain Festival in 2008. Dave Evans and the Tommy Webb Band are both awesome and either one of them alone would make it worthwhile to get yourself over to this festival.

You’ll see me there taking pictures and enjoying the whole thing!

Now for info on the Clack Mountain Festival!

An eclectic array of regional and national artists will highlight the third annual Clack Mountain Festival, to be held June 4 -- 5, 2010, in downtown Morehead, Kentucky.

Scheduled artists include rising stars Ben Sollee and Jill Andrews, bluegrass legends Dave Evans & River Bend and Larry Cordle and Lonesome Standard Time, and an assortment of well-regarded regional acts.

Well, I had a great time at the Morehead Old Time Fiddlers Convention this past weekend! This was the fourth year for the gathering but it was the first time for me. I have lived away from Morehead for a few years and so I missed a lot of cool stuff like this.

The event went on for two days but unfortunately I was only able to hang around for a few hours on Friday. I knew the Clack Mountain String Band was going to be playing that night and was really looking forward to hearing them. I have been to several Bluegrass Festivals recently but hadn’t gotten the chance to hear the Clack Mountain String Band play live.

This gathering is quite different from the usual Bluegrass Festival in that most of those in attendance are musicians. People were camping out and… Read the rest of this article

This weekend I had the pleasure of listening to some live bluegrass music. Me and a friend drove over to West Liberty to check out the Old Mill Bluegrass Festival. This is the 14th year for the Old Mill Bluegrass Festival. I do love live bluegrass music and there was some great stuff to hear.

One of the best things about a live bluegrass festival for me is that I often get the opportunity to hear groups for the first time. Two groups in particular that I had never heard before was Buck and Company and the Kati Penn Band. Both groups were excellent, I would definitely recommend getting some of their music!

It was also good to see some of my favorites at the festival. Tommy Webb Band, The Grascals and Don Rigsby are always welcome at a bluegrass… Read the rest of this article

This crazy hillbilly is crazy about Bluegrass Music! If you don’t dig Bluegrass then maybe you just haven’t stopped to take a listen to it.

Yesterday, June 6th, my family and I attended the Clack Mountain Festival in Morehead, Kentucky. I enjoy a lot of different styles of music but Bluegrass Music is my favorite, especially when it is live. The Clack Mountain Festival is held every year in early June. Admission is only $5.00 which is really an excellent deal to get to sit back and listen to awesome bands like Hazel Holler and the Tommy Webb Band.

I got the opportunity to talk with Ralph Stanley, Tommy Webb and Michelle Wallace of the Hazel Holler Girls and to hear a lot of great Bluegrass Music. The atmosphere was so friendly and I think everyone had a good time. A lot of folks came… Read the rest of this article
